Buying a Custom Staircase from China: Lead Time, DDP, Warranty and Installation

27 October 2026 13:54:13

Custom Staircase Manufacturer · Buying from China

Buying a custom staircase from China works well when the factory draws first, trial-assembles before packing, and ships on clear terms. For the USA, Australia and Canada we can ship DDP, so duties are in the quote. Insured crates, spare parts and our own installation crews remove most of the risk.

Owners who look at a factory overseas usually share the same worries: how long it will take, who pays the duties and what happens if a part arrives damaged. They also want to know who installs it and who stands behind it later. Those are fair questions, and a good answer to each one should sit in your quote and contract rather than in a sales promise. This guide walks through every one of them, in plain words, so you can judge a custom staircase from China on facts.

The Journey of a Custom Staircase from China

Every order follows the same path, starting with a shop drawing of the staircase that we draw to your opening and send for your approval. Production starts only after you sign it off. When the build is done, we stand the whole staircase up on our Guangdong workshop floor and check the fit. Then we take it apart, label each piece, crate it for the sea and ship it to you.

The last step happens in your home, where our own crews and partner installers can fit it in the USA, Australia and Canada, or your own contractor can work from our drawings. The animation below shows the whole route at a glance, from the first drawing to the finished stair.

Lead Time: How Long It Really Takes

Lead time has two parts, the build and the trip, and it helps to look at each one separately. Factory production usually takes 25 to 35 days, and that clock starts when you approve the shop drawing. A quick, clear approval is the single most useful thing you can do for the schedule, because answering questions fast and signing drawings without long gaps keeps the date where it should be.

Shipping is a choice between standard freight and expedited shipping, depending on how soon you need the staircase on site. Expedited shipping typically takes about 5 to 7 days. Standard freight follows the schedules running at the time, so we confirm the dates for your route in the quote rather than guessing here. Either way, you see the plan in writing before you commit.

Duties, Tariffs and DDP for a Custom Staircase from China

Import duties are a real part of the cost, and they are the part buyers fear most when they consider an overseas factory. In the USA, goods made in China can carry extra tariffs, including Section 301 duties where they apply, and the rate depends on the product's customs classification and on rules that change over time. That is exactly why the shipping terms in your quote matter so much.

For the USA, Australia and Canada, we can ship DDP, which stands for Delivered Duty Paid. Under the Incoterms rules, DDP is the one term where the seller clears the goods for import and pays the import duties and taxes. In practice, we handle customs, deliver to your site and build the duties into the price you approve, so you never face a surprise bill at the port.

If you prefer another term, such as shipping to a port and using your own freight agent, that works too. We simply agree the term with you at the start and write it into the quote, so everyone knows who handles each leg of the trip and who pays for it.

Payment Terms You Agree, Not Terms You Are Told

Because we build each custom staircase for one house, some money changes hands before production starts. We agree with you, project by project, how much that deposit is and when the balance falls due, and we keep it flexible on purpose. The aim is a payment schedule you are comfortable with, matched to real progress you can see on video or in person.

Whatever we agree goes into the written contract, together with the drawings, the materials, the shipping term and the warranty terms. Read it before you pay anything and ask about any line that is unclear, because a good factory welcomes those questions and a clear contract protects both sides.

Seeing It Before It Ships: Samples, Video and Factory Visits

Distance is the hardest part of buying from far away, because you cannot run your hand along the rail in a showroom down the road. So we bring the checks to you in three different ways, and you can use any one of them or all three together.

First, we can send samples, so you can hold the finish, the timber or the stone in your own light before you decide. Second, we can walk you through the trial assembly on a live video call, where you watch the finished staircase standing on our workshop floor and ask us to show any joint, weld or tread. Third, you are very welcome to visit our factory in Foshan, Guangdong, and see the work in person, and we actively support those visits.

LIVE
Samples, a live video walk-through of the trial assembly, or a visit to the factory. You choose how you want to check your staircase before it is crated.

Transit Damage, Insurance and Spare Parts

A staircase with glass and stone is a heavy, fragile load, and a long trip carries some risk, so we plan for it in three layers. We build the crates for ocean freight, protect every finished face and label each piece in the order it goes up. We insure the shipment, and we pack a generous supply of common spare parts, such as fixings and fittings, so a small loss on site does not stop the job.

If something larger gets damaged on the way, we can send replacement parts by air, which keeps the wait short instead of waiting for another sea crossing. It is still wise to check the crates on arrival and photograph anything unusual before you sign for them, because clear records make any insurance claim faster and simpler.

Installation in the USA, Australia and Canada

This is where buying from a factory has changed. In the USA, Australia and Canada, our own crews and partner installers can install your staircase nationwide, and we quote installation separately so you see exactly what it costs. Because we already stood the staircase up in our workshop, the work on site is mostly placing, fixing and joining parts that we made to match each other.

You are always free to use your own contractor instead, since every order ships with assembly drawings and a step-by-step guide, and our team stays on hand to answer questions during the fit. Where a staircase has lighting, a licensed electrician connects it. The final code sign-off stays with your local building authority, because they hold the edition of the code that applies to your address.

Warranty and After-Sales Care

Every staircase comes with a warranty, and its terms depend on the materials you choose and the services we provide, such as installation. We set those terms out in the contract for your project and agree them with you before production, because our goal is a result you are happy with for years, not just on delivery day.

After delivery, the same team that drew your staircase is the one you call with any question. Because the same factory drew and built every part, we can make a replacement to the same drawing, which is one quiet benefit of working with the factory that built the whole staircase.

Who You Talk To

Long chains of people cause most mistakes in custom work, so each project has one dedicated contact who follows it from the first sketch to the last crate, backed by our design team. Nobody passes you from desk to desk, and replies come promptly by WhatsApp, email or a call, so questions do not sit unanswered for days.

That same team is behind the short video below, which follows one staircase from drawing to front door.

Buyer's Checklist: Common Worries, Clear Answers

Tap any worry below to open the answer. Then ask any factory you speak to the same questions, and compare the replies.

“It will take too long.”

Production usually takes 25 to 35 days after drawing approval, and expedited shipping typically about 5 to 7 days. Your dates are confirmed in the quote.

“Tariffs will make it expensive.”

With DDP to the USA, Australia or Canada, we pay the import duties and clear customs, so they are already in the price you approve.

“I have to pay a large deposit up front.”

The deposit and the balance are agreed with you for each project and written into the contract.

“I cannot check the quality from here.”

Ask for samples, watch the trial assembly on a live video call, or visit the factory in Foshan.

“It may arrive damaged.”

The shipment is insured, common spare parts travel in the crates, and replacement parts can be sent by air.

“Nobody local will install it.”

Our own crews and partner installers cover the USA, Australia and Canada nationwide, quoted separately. Your own contractor is welcome too.

“The warranty will be hard to use.”

Warranty terms are written into your contract, and replacement parts are made to the same drawings by the team that built the staircase.

“Communication will be slow.”

One dedicated contact and our design team follow your project and reply promptly.

FAQ

Is it safe to buy a custom staircase from China?

It is when the factory works drawing-first, trial-assembles before packing and ships on written terms. Insurance, spare parts and DDP shipping remove most of the remaining risk. Always check that each of these appears in the contract.

How long does a custom staircase from China take?

Production usually takes 25 to 35 days after you approve the drawing. Expedited shipping typically adds about 5 to 7 days, and standard freight follows current schedules, which we confirm in the quote.

Who pays the import duties?

Under DDP, we do. For the USA, Australia and Canada we can clear customs and pay the duties, so they are already in your price. Under other terms, you or your freight agent handle import clearance.

Do you install the staircase?

Yes, in the USA, Australia and Canada. Our own crews and partner installers work nationwide, quoted separately, or your own contractor can install it from our drawings.

Can I see my staircase before it ships?

Yes. We can send samples, show you the trial assembly on a live video call, and you are welcome to visit our factory in Guangdong.
