Stainless Steel and Sintered Stone: An Outdoor Kitchen Built for Virginia Weather
A sink run against the house and a grill station under its own canopy, in stainless steel boxes faced with grey veined sintered stone, beside the pool of a modern Virginia home.
By Double Building Materials — the factory in Guangdong, China that drew, built and crated the outdoor cabinetry for this home. Written from our project record and site photos. Published November 2026. The same home's staircases and glass are covered in a separate case.

The finished terrace: the sink run against the house on the left, the grill station under its canopy on the right. Virginia.
The Project at a Glance
Outdoor kitchen cabinets for a modern home in Virginia, for the same builder as our staircase and glass project. A sink run with drawers and a beverage refrigerator sits against the house, and a grill station stands at the corner of the terrace. Stainless steel boxes carry sintered stone fronts.
The Challenge
An outdoor kitchen lives in the weather all year. In Virginia that means hot, humid summers, heavy rain and freezing nights in winter. Sun fades many finishes, and water that reaches a wood or particleboard box makes it swell. Cabinets on an open terrace face all of it with little shelter.
The second test is the house itself. The run stands against a white wall, beside tall glass doors into the house, so it reads as part of the architecture from indoors and from the pool. A front that weathers unevenly, or a joint that opens, would show from the living room.
The third question was the grill. A built-in grill puts heat and grease into one box, so the cabinet around it has to follow the grill's own installation sheet, and the station needed shelter of its own.
The Design
The outdoor kitchen is split in two. Against the house, a straight run carries two drawer stacks, a glass-door beverage refrigerator, the sink doors and a matching stone splash. At the corner of the terrace, a separate grill station stands under a dark canopy, with doors below the grill and a stone end panel facing the garden. Every front is the same grey sintered stone with light veining, edged in a thin black line, so the two pieces read as one set. The fronts are flat, which keeps the run quiet against the plain white wall.
What These Outdoor Kitchen Cabinets Are Made Of
Behind each stone front is the same build: a stainless steel box, then the stone face. The diagram takes an outdoor base cabinet apart and puts it back together, in the same two materials as this kitchen.
Inside an outdoor base cabinet
A typical outdoor base cabinet, for illustration: taken apart, then put together. Sizes and details on any project come from its own drawings.
- Stainless steel box. Sides, bottom, back and rails in stainless steel sheet. Steel does not rot or swell when rain or pool water reaches it, which is why it carries the structure outdoors.
- Sintered stone fronts. A dense mineral surface on every door and drawer. Neolith, one maker, describes sintered stone as resistant to scratches, high temperatures and UV rays, with colors that hold in sun and extreme weather.
- Stone splash and end panel. The splash behind the sink and the end of the grill station are the same stone, so sun and rain meet one material.
- Openings drawn for the appliances. The beverage refrigerator, the sink and the grill sit in openings drawn from their own spec sheets.
Our stainless steel outdoor kitchen cabinets page shows the box in detail, and our outdoor kitchen cabinets page compares stainless steel, aluminum and HDPE.
Sun, Rain and Frost
Summer sun
Pool terraces get strong reflected light. A stone face keeps its color without paint or a coating that could peel, and Neolith's outdoor kitchen guidance describes it as unharmed by UV rays, rain or extreme weather.
Rain and pool water
Water runs off stone and steel instead of soaking in. That is the main reason boxes made of wood boards belong indoors, while a stainless box can stand on an open terrace.
Winter
Stainless steel and sintered stone both tolerate frost. The weak point in a Virginia winter is the water line to the outdoor sink, which should be shut off and drained before the first hard freeze.
From Drawing to Site
Drawing-First Coordination
Drawing-First Coordination means the outdoor kitchen is drawn, and you approve it, before any part is cut. Here the drawings set the sink run against the measured wall, the window above it, and the water and power points, then size each opening to the refrigerator, sink and grill.
Trial Assembly Before Packing
Trial Assembly Before Packing is our standard. Steel boxes and stone fronts are put together in our Guangdong workshop, doors are aligned and checked, and every part is labelled to its place on the terrace.
Export-Ready Crating
Export-Ready Crating means the boxes and the stone fronts travel in crates built for the ocean crossing, with every stone face protected and every crate labelled.
Double Building Materials draws, makes, trial-assembles, crates and ships. In the US, our crews and partner installers can install, quoted separately.
Installation in the US
In the United States, our crews and partner installers can fit an outdoor kitchen like this, quoted separately. Gas, water and electrical connections are work for licensed trades. If you prefer your own installer, they work from the shop drawings and the labels on every part. Tell us the project location with your plan, and we will confirm the options for your area.
The Same Home: Staircases and Glass
This outdoor kitchen belongs to one of two modern Virginia homes by the same builder. For those homes we also made square-tube staircases with glass railings, glass balconies, frameless showers, sauna glass and garage doors. From the pool, the glass balcony and the staircase behind the tall windows are part of the same view.

Planning an Outdoor Kitchen Like This? Five Decisions to Make First
- Place the grill first. Decide where heat and smoke will go, away from doors, windows and the main walkway, then draw the rest of the run around it.
- Bring the utilities into the drawing. Mark the gas, water, drain and outlet positions on your plan. These connections are for licensed trades, and the cabinet openings are drawn around them.
- Choose materials for your climate. Stainless boxes with stone or HDPE fronts suit sun, rain and frost; wood and particleboard boxes belong indoors. Our outdoor kitchen cabinets page compares the options.
- Send the appliance spec sheets. The grill, the refrigerator, the sink and any side burner each set an opening and its clearances. The shop drawings follow them.
- Leave counter space where you work. Plan counter on both sides of the grill and beside the sink, for plates going out and food coming in.
For Builders and Designers: What Arrives on Site
If you are the builder or designer on a project like this, here is what to expect. You approve shop drawings before production starts. Steel boxes and stone fronts arrive crated, with every part labelled to its place after trial assembly. Our crews and partner installers can fit the run, quoted separately; if your own installer does it, they work from the shop drawings, and we provide an assembly guide and a step-by-step video.

Frequently Asked Questions
Are stainless steel outdoor kitchen cabinets better than wood?
Outdoors, in most climates, yes. Stainless steel does not rot or swell when it gets wet, while wood and particleboard take up water. Stainless boxes with stone or HDPE fronts are a common pairing.
Does sintered stone fade in the sun?
Makers describe sintered stone as resistant to UV rays, with colors that hold in sun and extreme weather. The color is part of the stone, not a paint layer.
Can outdoor kitchen cabinets stay outside through a Virginia winter?
Stainless steel and sintered stone both tolerate frost. Shut off and drain the water line to the outdoor sink before the first hard freeze.
What do you need to quote an outdoor kitchen?
A measured plan of the terrace and some photos. Add the grill, refrigerator and sink models, and the positions of the gas, water and power points.
Do you install outdoor kitchens in Virginia?
In the US, our crews and partner installers can install, quoted separately. Gas, water and electrical connections are made by licensed trades.
